The Carbuncle is a very Fiend Folio-ish monster, being a psychic armadillo with a gem in its forehead. It will give up the gem if persuaded by a ‘wizard or person of similiar social standing’, and also sows disorder and anger amonst the adventuring party (and then it watches with ‘morbid fascination’ before slinking away)

My first encounter with the carbuncle was through the Final Fantasy games, where it was one of the many summons. Then again, it’s not surprising, taken into account how many things the Final Fantasy games have stolen from D&D.


Or how many things D&D stole from Tolkien…
